They just aren’t my thing. But this one caught my eye while searching for a light, humorous read, so I decided to give it a try.

Wow am I glad I did! No Regrets is definitely a light, fun read, but there is substance there beneath the softness, bones beneath the flesh, shadows behind the sunshine, and it gave the story that much more depth. I could not stop turning the pages.

Told from the point of view of two main characters, Darby and Joe (a.k.a. Mac), this is a sweet story of redemption—not just for Darby, who’s had a rough life and grown thick skin to save herself, but for Joe, who’s been covering ever since the death of his wife, and for his step-son, Andrew, who has his own secrets I won’t reveal here. But the road to redemption isn’t always straight, nor is it smooth. The bumps and curves and potholes along the way make life more challenging, and there are plenty of those in these pages. I loved every minute and couldn’t wait to see how these characters—to whom I was deeply connected within the first few chapters—would resolve their issues. I was not disappointed.

Author Ronnie Roberts does a masterful job of scene description and character introspection without getting too sappy or infodumping on her readers. In fact, these details (which I often skip in books that overdo them) added to the story for me, and I drank them in. Her character backgrounds aren’t dropped in our laps all at once but are parsed out over the course of the narrative, with some of the final details being revealed late in the story so I got that “AHA” moment that made the resolution that much more meaningful.

There are tender moments scattered throughout, but they aren’t overdone, or I’d have put the book down. And while there is some sexuality and sensuality (hey, it’s a romance, right?), there is no explicit sex on the page (another thing that will make me put a book down). Roberts kept a good balance there, giving us just enough, but leaving the rest behind closed doors.

Again, I don’t read much romance. Haven’t read one in years, actually. But this? Yeah, I’d read more of this and will be looking for the other books in the series. If you love romance, even if you aren’t a romance fan, but want something with humor, softness, hope, and redemption, check out No Regrets. Most highly recommended.

Wedding Dress Promise Series Book 1 By Ronnie Roberts © October 21, 2014, Pajama Therapy Books ASIN: B00ORVTM2U Kindle Version, file size 2329 KB I don’t usually read romances.
