Strange men come into her life, turning it upside down and asking more of her than she’s ready to give. But if she fails, there are Consequences. She can’t let that happen. And no one ever taught Violet to surrender—with or without a fight.

I was drawn into this story from the very start. The author’s use of magic, the supernatural, and runes intrigued me and kept me reading, sometimes past my bedtime. In addition to the underlying theme of Light vs. Darkness, I liked the inclusion of elements like meditation, yoga, and reiki, things I haven’t often seen in contemporary fiction. The book has weight to it, since the Scouts Violet is called to defeat are spreading Darkness wherever they go, and they are after her. They know she is The One prophesied to stop them. They’ll do anything to stop her, but…they don’t know Violet very well. (Evil grin.)

The pacing is pretty steady, with periods of action/tension and just-right moments of relief. There’s also a lot of romantic tension when the two handsome and mysterious brothers come into Violet’s life. She’s caught between them, yet isn’t ready to commit. I’m not a big fan of romance, as a rule, but these bits were so woven into the larger plot it didn’t take away from the story at all.

The stakes for Violet’s world are enormous. And yet, even though the story is edgy at times, it wasn’t a stressful read. I enjoyed getting lost in the pages and following along as Violet figured things out one step at a time. (And yes, she does eventually choose a brother. Or does she? No spoilers!) Do note that while there is a mostly satisfactory ending, not everything is completely wrapped up in this book; look also for the sequel, When Violet Took Flight.

Overall, this was an entertaining read, one that made me laugh, cry, and keep turning pages. Recommended.

By allison keli © November 23, 2022, Meditating Squirrel Publishing File size: 1.8 MB 338 pages ASIN: B0BMWT787Z When Violet Got Bored is the absorbing tale of a young, 30-something bodyworker who is called—against her strong will—to be the hero of a prophecy she’s never heard of.
