Clara’s abusive late husband, Joe, has left her the perfect house as part of her inheritance—a historical home in Salem, Massachusetts, complete with the ghost of William Kensington, who’s now her best friend. But when Clara goes to the bookstore to gather historical references to the home, she learns that William may not be who she thought he was. Further, while she’s there, visitors discover the body of Salem’s own best-selling novelist, who is killed while on a bathroom break from her launch party and book signing in the store. To make matters worse, now the author’s ghost is pressuring Clara to solve her murder. Clara just wants to get on with her life, turn her new home into a bed-and-breakfast, and rebuild her life in this new place, except the ghosts have other ideas.
I love cozy mysteries! Most are warm and fuzzy stories, great reads to enjoy under a blanket with a cup of tea and a few cookies. Ghost Writer is no exception. While this is book two in the Salem Spirits series, it’s easy to read and relate without having read book one (which is where her husband dies and William enters the scene). Without going too far into backstory, Author Dina Marie gives enough clarification to help the reader come up to speed and follow along.
I enjoyed getting to know Clara, who’s learning to be independent and build her own life without her abusive spouse. Her character shows a lot of courage, which just made me like her more. Even when a prospective new love interest enters the picture, she opts for friendship while she learns to stand on her own, a nice touch of women’s empowerment. Nicely done!
Ghost Writer is an easy read with endearing characters and a lot of heart. Definitely recommended.
