Dragon Apostle is the second book in Youngblood’s Projectionists Series, and follows close on the heels of book one, Grave Covenant. In Apostle, Ridley is learning to live with the dragon inside him. Iris is trying to find her father. Siv is coming to terms with being the last (as far as he knows) of his species. And Ilyana is teetering on the brink of some damning choices. What with never knowing when the dragon will emerge, or if Iris will get them into trouble, or whether Ilyana will turn toward the light or tip toward the dark, there’s plenty of tension and angst.
There are things to love and things to dislike about each of these morally grey characters; they don’t always do “the right thing.” Yet even when they’re acting in ways we don’t’ like, it’s easy to see their motivations and at least understand why they make the choices they do. Circumstances force them into changes they might not have chosen on their own.
The story takes place in the Big City, a metropolitan area with plenty of high-end nightlife, as well as sections so rife with crime the police won’t go there. Residents here are so accustomed to the unexpected that unprecedented events taking place right on the streets don’t raise any eyebrows or even draw attention. The setting totally fits; this is a story full of shadows and grit, passion and drive, regrets and, to some degree, redemption. But some shadows run darker than others in the Big City. Side characters take on unexpected depths; demons walk unseen among humans; and an ancient evil has been awakened.
You’ll want to read book 1 first, as the events in Dragon Apostle happen in direct consequence to those that take place in Grave Covenant. If you love dark, urban fantasy, I definitely recommend this series.
